I specialize in the chemical, pharmaceutical and medical sectors. My chemical practice includes “green energy” (e.g. oxyfuel combustion, synthesis gas production, fuel cells and carbon dioxide sequestration), gas separation by adsorption and cryogenic distillation, deposition techniques for forming semiconductor wafers, and polymers for many different purposes. In the pharmaceutical field, I work with new therapies for cardiovascular and metabolic disorders and GI-related indications, together with new techniques for the site specific delivery of drugs. My experience also extends to implantable medical devices and packaged gases.
I undertake original drafting work for a number of clients based overseas as well as for UK clients. I am experienced in prosecuting applications through patent offices worldwide, and have an enviable record of success at the EPO in opposition and appeal proceedings.
I have worked on projects for both innovator and generics companies, and have worked with the full range of clients from individuals to multinational companies. I enjoy being involved from the creation of an idea to the launch of the product, and have undertaken “invention harvesting” where client projects are reviewed to extract potentially patentable subject matter. I provide detailed and commercially-focused advice on patent strategy and freedom to operate.
I am also a visiting lecturer at UCL School of Pharmacy on their MSc course entitled “Pharmaceutical formulation and entrepreneurship” where I lecture on the IP aspects of setting up a new pharmaceutical business.
At Beck Greener, I am the partner responsible for the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) function. As part of the “greener Beck Greener” project, I have introduced a number of environmental initiatives intended to reduce the carbon footprint of the firm. These initiatives have been recognised by the Camden Climate Change Alliance with the award of the “Cutting Carbon” and “Team Green” marks of achievement. I also oversee implementation of a schools project to promote careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in general and in the IP profession in particular and to this end have become a STEM Ambassador with our community partner, STEM Learning UK.
